Sleep apnoea and tiredness

Loud snoring with breathing pauses: you sleep all night and wake up unrefreshed.

In obstructive sleep apnoea the airway closes repeatedly during sleep; each closure ends with a snort and a micro-awakening, dozens of times an hour, all night. The person gets their hours and none of the rest. The signature is loud snoring plus witnessed breathing pauses plus daytime sleepiness, and it is far more common with excess weight.

The check starts with the STOP-Bang screening questions and, if they point that way, a sleep study. Treatment is real and effective — CPAP, a positional fix, or weight loss — and treating it protects the heart and the brain, not just the mornings.

Check first

A partner's answer to "do I stop breathing in my sleep?" — then a sleep study.

Reference, not medical advice. If tiredness is progressive, unexplained, or comes with weight loss, fevers, night sweats or breathlessness, see a clinician. Nothing here diagnoses.
